Trailhead Biosystems Launches New iPSC-Derived Neurons for Parkinson’s Research
The iPSC-derived A9 dopaminergic neurons will hopefully offer researchers a human-based model for Parkinson’s disease studies.

Trailhead Biosystems has launched TrailBio® A9 Dopaminergic Neurons, an off-the-shelf human cell model designed to support research in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. These cells are derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and provide a human-specific platform for studying disease mechanisms, therapy development, and drug discovery.
A9 dopaminergic neurons are critical for movement regulation and are particularly vulnerable in Parkinson’s disease. Until now, researchers have relied heavily on animal models, which have limited relevance to human biology. The new TrailBio® A9 Dopaminergic Neurons offer researchers direct access to the human cell type most affected in Parkinson’s disease.
This follows recent news from the FDA announcing plans to phase out animal testing in preclinical safety studies, particularly for monoclonal antibody therapies and other drugs, in favor of a “more effective, human-relevant methods.” The agency’s new approach emphasizes the use of AI-based computational modeling, human organoid and organ-on-a-chip platforms, and real-world human data, aiming to improve drug safety and accelerate development while reducing animal use and research costs.

Trailhead Biosystems uses a proprietary High-Dimensional Design-of-Experiments (HD-DoE®) platform, which combines advanced mathematical modeling with high-throughput robotic manufacturing, to create optimized human cells at scale. The company reports that additional specialized human cell models are also in development using this system.
