Gallant’s Veterinary Stem Cell Therapy Nabs Key Safety Requirement from FDA for Cats with Severe Oral Disease

Gallant is inching closer to making veterinary history, potentially launching the first off-the-shelf stem cell product in the field next year.

Gallant has received a “Technical Section Complete” letter from the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA-CVM) for Target Animal Safety (TAS), a key requirement in the approval process for veterinary drugs.

The new product, sonruvetcel injectable suspension, is an allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cell therapy derived from uterine tissue, for cats with refractory feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS), a severe oral inflammatory condition often resistant to standard treatments.

In short, the TAS designation confirms that Gallant’s data meet the FDA’s 365-day safety criteria for cell therapies. The company reports that its study was conducted in client-owned cats with refractory FCGS, rather than healthy laboratory animals, and demonstrated both short- and long-term safety in this population.

Sonruvetcel is manufactured under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards using cells sourced from healthy, specific-pathogen-free, FDA-qualified feline donors, and Gallant says they’ve established the potency for this indication, anticipating conditional FDA approval by early 2026. If they achieve that, this will make history as the first off-the-shelf stem cell therapy in veterinary medicine.

This follows their September 2025 announcement, when Gallant achieved the “Technical Section Complete” status on Reasonable Expectation of Effectiveness (RXE). In a pivotal clinical trial published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, over 75% of treated cats showed clinically significant improvement in quality of life by Day 90, and nearly half had measurable reductions in oral lesions. No serious treatment-related adverse events were reported.

Stay tuned, Gallant is on the interview docket!
