New Korean Stem Cell Hub Coming to Baltimore, Focused on OA and Alzheimer’s Research
Nature Cell’s new facility will focus on stem cell therapeutics, research, and manufacturing, supported by the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund.
Korea’s Nature Cell plans to open a 100,000-square-foot stem cell manufacturing facility in Baltimore, expected to create 500 new jobs.
The site will be located at 1401 Severn Street within the Gaslight Square complex and is scheduled for completion in two phases by 2031.
The Baltimore facility will be operated by its subsidiary, Nature Cell America, and will focus on stem cell research related to knee osteoarthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as clinical trials and manufacturing of its investigational products. The company reports it aims to produce up to one million doses per year of its stem cell injection product, JointStem, which received FDA Breakthrough Designation (BTD) earlier this year.
The company cited Maryland’s Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) and available local skilled workforce as primary reasons for selecting Baltimore.
The Maryland Department of Commerce is working on a $4 million conditional loan toward project costs. The Baltimore Development Corporation plans an additional $400,000 conditional loan, along with assistance in expediting permitting processes.
