Steminent Filing for Japanese Approval of its Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Spinocerebellar Ataxia
The company is hoping to be the 2nd Taiwanese cell therapy approved abroad.

Key Points
- Steminent says its Japanese partner has filed for temporary marketing approval in Japan for Stemchymal®, with a potential decision in the first half of 2027.
- Stemchymal® is an allogeneic (donor derived) mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy for spinocerebellar ataxia types 3 and 6.
- Steminent will manufacture the product, while REPROCELL holds exclusive commercialization rights in Japan.
Steminent, a Taiwanese biotech company, has announced that its Japanese licensing partner has submitted Stemchymal® for Japan’s temporary marketing approval pathway. The therapy is being developed for spinocerebellar ataxia types 3 and 6, which the release broadly refers to as cerebellar atrophy. The company says approval could come as early as the first half of 2027.
Stemchymal® is an allogeneic (donor derived) mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy. It received orphan regenerative medicine designation from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (their FDA) in 2017, which could shorten the review period to about nine months.
Commercial Structure and Broader Plans
Under the licensing agreement, Steminent is responsible for manufacturing Stemchymal®. REPROCELL Inc. is responsible for sales, distribution, and commercialization in Japan, and holds exclusive commercial rights in that market.
Steminent also says its U.S. clinical program is continuing, with patient enrollment expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. The company adds that it is discussing licensing and commercialization opportunities in the EU, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Curious about the Japanese regen med pathways?
Japan’s temporary marketing approval pathway is similar in concept to Taiwan’s conditional approval framework under its regenerative medicine product law, which allows certain therapies to seek time-limited approval after Phase 2 clinical testing. We interviewed JSRM, the non-profit behind those laws here.
If Stemchymal® is approved in Japan, Steminent would become the second Taiwan cell therapy company to secure overseas commercial authorization for a cell therapy product, according to the release.
