New Study: Extracellular Vesicles in Fibrin Gel for Cartilage Repair (Italy)

The Italian researchers will do a 51 person trial with MSC-derived EVs in PRP-derived fibrin gels.

This study will evaluate whether extracellular vesicles (EVs) embedded in platelet-rich plasma (PRP)-derived fibrin gel can support cartilage repair in patients with joint disease.

Conducted by researchers at I.R.C.C.S Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio, the trial seeks to combine the cartilage-promoting effects of PRP growth factors with the hyaline cartilage-stimulating properties of mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-derived EVs.

The researchers will enroll 51 participants.

The EVs will be labeled with fluorescent markers to track their release from the fibrin gel and their uptake by human chondrocytes, using imaging and cytometry techniques. Additionally, the researchers will assess the ability of released EVs to integrate into human chondrocytes and penetrate cartilage through three separate in vitro models: a 2D culture analyzed by flow cytometry, a 3D microfluidic model, and quantitative imaging using cartilage explants. Biological activity will also be tested specifically on pathological chondrocytes.

They expect to finish the trial in August of 2026.
